The short version
Paint color consultation in Naperville, IL is about testing, not guessing: we narrow the options with you, then brush large samples on the actual walls, on north and south sides for exteriors, and look at them morning and evening. Colors are recorded by brand, name and number so the paint order, touch-ups and any HOA application all match.
Why colors look different on your wall

A paint chip is a two-inch square seen under store lighting. On your wall it covers hundreds of square feet, sits next to your floors, cabinets and furniture, and changes all day as the light moves. North-facing rooms make colors cooler and darker; south-facing rooms warm them up. That is why the color that looked perfect in the store often reads gray, pink or green at home.
A consultation shortens that loop. We look at the fixed elements first, such as floors, counters, brick and roof, narrow the choices to a few, and paint samples big enough to judge. Fan decks from Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore and PPG come with us, so any line can be matched.
What moves the price of a color consultation
Consultations are priced by the scope of the plan, and often folded into the painting estimate.
- One room or a whole-house color plan
- Interior only, or exterior body, trim and accent too
- The number of samples painted on the walls
- HOA or Historic District documentation needed
- Whether it is booked alone or with the paint job
Whole-House Color Plans
A whole-house plan picks colors that flow from room to room, so the view down a hallway or across an open floor plan feels connected. We usually pick one main wall color or a family of related neutrals, one trim white for the whole house, and a few accent colors for specific rooms. The plan is written down by room with brand, name, number and sheen, so painters, family members and future touch-ups all work from the same list instead of a pile of chips.
Exterior Body, Trim and Accent
Exterior colors are chosen against things that will not change: the roof, the brick or stone, and the neighboring houses. We pick a body color, a trim color and an accent for the front door and shutters, then paint samples on both a sunny and a shaded wall, since the same color looks very different on each. If your neighborhood has an HOA, we check the choices against its approved palette and provide names and numbers for the application. Garage doors are included in the plan, since they are often the largest single surface at the front.

Samples Painted on Your Wall
Samples are the heart of the consultation. We brush large patches of each finalist directly on the wall, or on sample boards that can be moved around the room, and leave them up so you can see them in morning light, afternoon sun and lamp light at night. Two or three finalists are usually enough. Once you choose, the color goes straight onto the paint order and the estimate, so the decision turns into a scheduled job. Leftover sample pots are labeled so the rooms can be compared again later.
Color approvals around Naperville and Plainfield
Many homes in Naperville and Plainfield fall under HOA guidelines where exterior colors go to a committee or neighborhood board, and owners in the Naperville Historic District need a Certificate of Appropriateness before most exterior alterations. For those homes, a color consultation also produces what the review needs: color names and numbers for each surface, and sample photos taken on the house itself.

How long choosing colors takes
The visit itself is short; the time goes into living with the samples. We paint them during the consultation and ask you to look at them over a couple of days, in morning and evening light, before deciding. For exteriors, samples on a sunny and a shaded wall need the same look. Once you choose, we lock the colors into the estimate and order paint for the scheduled start.
